Manmohan Singh vs Obama

Two recent incidents that can be paralleled recently is the Connecticut gun shootings and the brutal rape incident in delhi , which received much attention. But what is interesting is how both leaders handled the after math of the situation.

Obama addresses the nation immediately with an emotional touch. we really do not know if he really wiped his tears ,but his sincere effort  to address the nation is commendable. On the other hand Our PM reads out a prepared message sans any emotion or empathy. There was not any point during his speech where people would have felt an assuage from him.The tone of his speech was not any different from his FDI speech!
We needed statements like , "We are with you" , "We will make sure such brutal incidents do not happen again". The tone of the whole speech was missing completely!

If the head of our country behaves in such a emotion less and apathy manner, how would the servile people under him be even inspired? It is better off if Our PM were silent rather than by releasing messages devoid of any life.

Is India really secular?

Time and again we hear politicians brand themselves as "secular" and that they serve every community with equal attention.!. We need to ruminate as to what being secular means.

Wikipedia says this
"Secularity (adjective form secular,[1] from Latin saecularis meaning "worldly" or "temporal") is the state of being separate from religion, or not being exclusively allied or against any particular religion."

Not being exclusively allied or against any particular religion is the crux of the definition here.
India is a secular country, but every election is contested based on religion or caste, which is against the fundamental fabric of our society.

Reservations :
I simply fail to fathom the concept of reservations everywhere!. So called Backward people ( I abhor this term, such terms make people belonging to that particular caste weak and suppressed.)
Now they get 7 attempts to clear the IAS, reservations in IIT, IIM, jobs and quite recently our politicians have passed a bill to implement reservations in promotions!Where is all this leading to?

In what way are the so called " Back ward classes" different from other cast people? They get the same education , same opportunities. Why do they need crutches all along their life?Is this what secularism is all about. Is not India allied against the back ward class people and against other castes?

This class system was created by the British to oppress Indians to create a  level of hated amongst us , so that they can employ the divide and rule policy efficiently. They have succeeded in the past and are still now!

This is the statement by the Prime Minister of India
"Muslims should have the first claim on the country's resources.",
Is this secularism? This is display of vote bank politics.

I vehemently oppose such policies which were framed 300 years ago. We need policies which resonate with current times.
If India has to prosper , you can have reservations based on monetary and financial status but not on cast, creed or color.

The other side of the Delhi Rape Incident.

We all know the recent horrific act is tantamount to barbaric behaviour. No doubts but there is a facade which  the society fails to see!
One could this have been prevented?
Two Is this issue the biggest crime committed in India?

Let me address the first issue , If we track the events, we have come to know that the driver is always in a 1 1 ) stupor state
2) The bus's windows were tinted.
3) He had mental disorder.
4) He is a frequent offender.

If the Delhi police had stringent laws to curb drivers in ebriated state, this driver would have been caught. So a frequent check across arterial roads is the first missing link to this incident. If drunk drivers are castigated and given long term punishments ( 5 years) they will proscribe themselves from drinking.
What we need:
Tough laws to curb the drinking menace.

Supreme courts order to remove tinted glasses were in place .Cities like Chennai have implemented them strictly. Why did this bus still have tinted glasses? If the tinted glasses had been removed, there was a 60 % chance that this incident could have been avoided as rapes do not happen in public view.

What we need:
Implement the existing law of Tinted glasses in cars and buses.

The driver had a history of mental disorders and I'm not aware of any driver undergoing mental checks before issuing or renewing licenses. This must be in place!
What we need:
Implement law to Investigate drivers Mental health before issuing / renewing licenses.

The most pivotal yet failed link is that he has been a frequent offender!.
If the police already has  a record of a offender , after his parole , he must be tracked where his job is and must be always on the watch list!we have the necessary technology to do this! why not implement it?
What we need:
Laws to track habitual offenders,

I think it is an ir responsible statement by the Chief Minister of Delhi to state that she is not responsible for the police force. If she is not  responsible for the security of the state? what is the chief minister for?Indian laws must change to bring in accountability to every chief minister. More than the incident ,it is presumptuous
to run away from mistakes ( mentioned above).
This incident is not a accident or it was not preventable. It was well under the jurisdiction of the authorities to prevent this .This took place due to a languid approach to the security of people at various levels.A chain of incidents led to this!

I'm not sure of the rapists must be given death sentence but yes the official must be severely punished for not implementing existing laws. If death sentence must act as a deterrent, officials must also face the same kind of fear.

Gun Culture : Part 2 : United States

In continuation of the previous Blog regarding the Gun Culture . One solution that can abate the depravity of the GUN is the application of leash on the "fuel" - Ammunition. Yes! Guns are easy to manufacture but ammunitions are not!Bullets or magazines require precise and expensive machinery and are also difficult to make by individuals.

The colorado shooter for instance ordered 6000 rounds of ammo online! This is the ease with which ammunitions are available. If the authorities control the flow of ammunition that would be first step towards easy access.Slowly and steadily the production of ammos must be brought down .At one point the demand would become really high . I'm not saying that this alone will curb the menace but in addition to this background checks, training are required to stop this.

Gun Culture :United States

Recent happenings in Sandy Hook elementary school reminds us of depravity of Gun culture. The root cause goes long back 250 years before!

The Second Amendment (Amendment II) to the United States Constitution is the part of the United States Bill of Rights that protects theright of the people to keep and bear arms. It was adopted on December 15, 1791, along with the rest of the Bill of Rights. (Source : Wikipedia)

This amendment was close to 250 years before when United States was torn in a civil war. You needed such laws to proscribe people from decimating everyone.Today , United States is a democratic country and this is not  a war zone or hunting ground for people to possess weapons. So, this amendment really in anachronistic and does not really relate to current scenario. So United Stated really needs to see if their second amendment is applicable in today's scenario!.

If I divulge the details of the incident last week , there are just too many ethereal instances that would make us to introspect our behaviour. Firstly, A semi automatic rifle such as a Bush Master is to be used in a war Zone and not to defend yourself! In this particular instance Nancy Lanza had 3 weapons. Two hand guns and a Semi automatic rifle ( Bush master). The law must be stringent to restrict individuals from possessing more than one weapon. After all the amendment does not say you need a semi automatic rifle or a AK47!.So the first step is not to ban weapons, which might lead to adverse effects.Rather, the authorities must pass a dictum to restrict the number of weapons per house hold. Not more than one and no more than a hand gun.
This is the first step!.

Secondly, the issue of gun themselves. The biggest issue of the proliferation of the Gun culture is that even a 5 year old kid will have access to such weapons and will use it to resolve any minor conflicts!.Arguments could prop up stating that if guns why not knives. True. That brings us to a whole lot different discussion! Why are guns dangerous? Violent Video games, lack of out door activities, Lack of an emotional bond with people are one the may reasons for such diabolical incidents.GUNS are not the reason they are just tools to express their emotional defunct. There is a facade which  people are defiant to see through. If we remove that facade what we would encounter is a deep rooted problem!A problem within American Culture and its structure.
Kids spend so much time with smart phones and computers, they hardly grow up being emotional! Lack of emotional bonding is one of the reasons for such heinous crimes.Guns are so easily accessible that it is used to vent their frustrations and despondence.

How doe we tackle this?
First reduce the number of weapons allowed per household. Perform thorough mental health checks and back ground verification.Even if a distant member of the family has a mental health issue, weapons should not  be allowed for the entire family.
Secondly, solve issues behind the facade. Frequent counselling and training an over all improvement in the emotional state of  the population in the age group 15-30.

I would like to conclude that providing security to every school or shopping mall or a theatre is not a feasible option ,but working on the root issues of why a 20 year old without any motive is ready to kill innocent kids is what needs to pondered!

Skilled Labour

So we are so called skilled labours right?
I  was shown today by a person who came to fix my leaking faucet as to what being an expert or skilled is!
While  fixing my leaking tap he noticed that the water flow in another tap was not rhythmic or continuous.I said No No thats how it has always been. He quickly  un did the tap holdings with great panache and finesse  and says "Well the filter has been put in reverse" !!Did you do this?
With a sheepish face , I said Yes!, then he placed the filter in the correct position and handed it over to me . I tried to screw it in the slot and well I could not, it just would not get stuck in there!.
He took it from me and screwed it perfectly.

The point I'm trying to make here is this :
We might vaunt around of our soft skill / Technical skills but the truth of the matter is that the level of expertise the Plumber had while doing his job is not there in me. His adept way of working impressed me.I do not get impressed by people who solve problems in machines using debuggers, but people who have these basic skills makes me realise how sedentary we have become.we have become so insular and sophisticated that we just are not able to these small jobs.

Its high time we move our selves and try to perform such works!!!

Why India is poor country?

Though it is not nice to hear that , yes India is a poor country ,but have we ever thought why is it so?We have the resources , talent , skilled personnel.  A small country like Israel's GDP is 32,000$ where as India's GDP is just $ 1500!.I shall putforth certain  point I think the reasons for India being the way it is today!

Firstly, the cultural reason of saving is bad for the economy. Yes ! for a country like India saving is bad because money is not circulated in the market rather stored in Bank Accounts.People need to spend money on consumer goods .To bolster this point, I can quote Apple's decision to not to fray into Indian markets. Why? Apple does not see a market in India. If Apple decides to launch their trade mark Apple stores , You are generating jobs thousands of them , which will in turn spur Mobile markets for apps and payment modules. Near field communications could revolutionise the way we shop. I'm quoting one example of how things can really change. But the basic impasse here is us- consumers. We are so capricious in even deciding  to purchase a small product. When it comes to a expensive product we simply are not ready to invest money in that product.Secondly, In the United states you could swipe you card for a pittance amount $199 and get an Iphone and then you are in a quagmire situation with the Provider for 2 years. So why not that model in India , yeah I'm ready to pay 10k and buy it and be stuck to a provider for 2 years. Why cannot Apple get this model working?Well the problem is Indians are not trust worthy !! Yes, it is so difficult to maintain such a model in India because people just would buy the phone for 10k and abandon the contract!

So the base point to spur our economy is to spend more and save little to serve us during  bad times.

Next, We think Americans are innovative and smart. They are leading the arms race, space race every race possible. So is it some cultural design? or genetical magic?  Well firstly there is no such concept of Native American. Native Americans have been completely decimated from the region. The Americans today are a  convoluted mix of people from Europe and Asian countries. So how does it happen? Magic!! Yes they have a magic called H 1B , a brain draining tool. Now India needs such talent to work for India, attract them and retain them. For that to happen , we need to make our  country attractive so it is a viscous circle!!

So India needs to remove corruption, strengthen its economy , retain the "brains",get our systems right , only then we can even think of becoming a super power.
